The following are steps to enable printer redirection for RDP session.

  1. If the client machines are running Windows XP, ensure that .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 is installed and at least RDC 6.1 is being used. Even if RDC 6.1 or above is used, the user must install a supported version of .NET Framework separately. Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 (which includes .NET Framework 3.0 SP1) can be downloaded from the Microsoft Download Center.

If the client machine is Windows 10, the printer redirection and printer driver will be configured automatically.

If the client machine is Windows 11, you may need to install the printer driver manually at the RDS Server and it to LTP1, LTP2 or LTP3.

  1. If your server is also a domain controller, refer to Install Remote Desktop Session Host role service in Windows Server without Connection Broker role service.

  1. If you connect over RD Gateway, ensure that the Group Policy that disables printer redirection is turned off, Easy Print on the Server is turned on. This is to be done at the RDS Server.

Search “Group Policy” in Windows Start to open the Local Group Policy Editor. Locate the following setting.

Computer Configuration

> Administrative templates

> Windows Components

> Remote Desktop Services

> Remote Desktop Session Host

> Printer Redirection

Do not allow client printer redirection” set to “Disabled

"Use Remote Desktop Easy Print printer driver first" set to "Enabled".

  1. Make sure that the Printers check box in the client (mstsc.exe) window on the Local Resources tab is checked. The corresponding setting in the associated RDP file is "redirectprinters:i:1".
